What is Vaulting?

Vaulters perform choreographed gymnastic sequences on a horse moving in a controlled circle. A longeur directs the horse with a surcingle and longeing gear while the vaulter works above. Competitions run in individual and team formats under FEI governance, with Olympic history limited to Antwerp 1920. Unlike trick riding or circus acts, vaulting follows formal competitive rules and uses a highly trained horse.
