What defines riding in Valais?
Valais stretches from nearly subtropical Rhône valley floors, where almond and pomegranate trees grow, to the highest glaciers in the Alps. The canton is bilingual: French shapes the Lower Valais, German the Upper Valais, with pockets of Francoprovençal still spoken in between. September and October bring mild temperatures and vivid autumn colours, making them the peak comfort months for exploring the region on horseback. The Rhône's course through steep terraced vineyards adds a distinctly Mediterranean character rarely found this deep in the Swiss Alps.
