Landscape & character

Fine sandy beaches for a canter at the water's edge, sheltered lagoon shores for quiet rides — and the avenue country in between.

Schleswig-Holstein contributes fjords, cliffs, and Holstein Switzerland; Mecklenburg-Vorpommern the lagoon landscapes, peninsulas, and islands between Fischland-Darß and Usedom. Coastal forests like the Darß woods and the dense network of historic avenues make the hinterland a riding territory of its own.

Beach riding: rules & season

The binding rules are always each municipality's beach bylaws — host farms know the open sections and times.

Beach-ride season through the year

JanFebMarAprMayJunJulAugSepOctNovDec

Winter half-year (c. Oct – Mar/Apr)

Many municipalities open their beaches completely or generously — the best time for long canters on empty sands.

Bathing season (c. May – Sept)

Riding is mostly restricted to designated riding beaches or fringe sections, sometimes only early morning and evening.

Consideration keeps the beaches open: walk near beach chairs, keep distance from bathers, clean up droppings. National park areas like the Vorpommern Lagoon Area have their own, stricter path rules.

From Fehmarn to Usedom

The best territories

Fischland-Darß-Zingst

Broad west-facing beaches, the primeval Darß forest, and the autumn crane migration. Guided beach rides from Wustrow, Ahrenshoop, and Prerow.

Rügen

Chalk coast, beech forests, lagoon meadows — the island south and Mönchgut are favourites. The chalk cliffs themselves (Jasmund NP) are not accessible on horseback.

Usedom

Kilometres of fine sandy beach plus a lake and forest hinterland — beach rides usually start in the quieter island north.

Holstein coast & Fehmarn

Cliffs and bathing beaches between Lübeck Bay and Fehmarn; Holstein Switzerland is an underrated trail-riding area.

Lagoons & hinterland

Quiet lagoon shores, avenues, manor estates, and stud tradition all the way to the Redefin state stud — little traffic, lots of space.

Weather & climate on the Baltic coast

The Baltic coast has a temperate maritime climate: summers stay pleasant, winters are mild but raw and damp. Rain falls evenly on 9–11 days per month, mostly as short showers; the sunniest months are May and June.

Getting there & practical

Rail: regional connections from Hamburg (Lübeck/Fehmarn) and from Rostock/Stralsund (Darß, Rügen, Usedom); many farms pick up from the station.

Car: the A1/A20 open up the whole coast; from Berlin, the Darß and Usedom are about three hours away.

Equipment: wind- and waterproof clothing year-round; gloves and warm boots in winter — there is almost always a breeze on the beach.

Skill level: farms require secure skills in all gaits for a beach canter; beginners ride guided at a walk or in the hinterland.
