Germany — horse country

Practically every region offers something for riders — the density of farms, trainers, and shows is unique worldwide.

Historically, German riding is deeply rooted in the classical training doctrine: the "training scale" shapes lessons in almost every riding club and is the international reference. In dressage and jumping, Germany has ranked among the most successful nations at Olympic Games and World Championships for decades.

Riding law: where may you ride?

Riding in the open countryside is governed by each federal state. The rule of thumb for visitors: your host farm knows the local rules — and guided rides are always legally safe.

§1

Roads & paths

Public roads may be ridden — traffic law applies, riders are treated like vehicle drivers. Private paths only with permission.

§2

Forest

Permitted on suitable tracks in Bavaria or Brandenburg; parts of NRW and Schleswig-Holstein restrict riding to designated bridle paths.

§3

Horse plates

NRW and Brandenburg require a riding plate on the horse plus a levy that funds bridle-path construction.

§4

Beaches & reserves

Beach rides are regulated by each municipality — generous in the winter half-year, restricted in summer. National parks have their own, stricter path rules.

When is what worthwhile?

Best time to travel

May – Oct · Main season

Late summer (Aug/Sep) is considered the finest time: stable warmth, blooming heather, quieter beaches.

Oct – Apr · Beach-ride season

Paradoxically attractive: in the winter half-year the Baltic beaches are open for riding and deserted.

Jul – Aug · High summer

Schedule rides for cool morning and evening hours; the uplands and Alpine foothills stay pleasant.

Practical notes

Getting there: dense rail and motorway network; most farms pick guests up from the nearest station.

Equipment: helmets are not legally required, but reputable farms make them mandatory; pack sturdy shoes with a heel.

Insurance: private accident insurance recommended; your own rider liability makes sense when travelling with your own horse.

Skill level: farms go by the FN badges (RA 10–1); for guided rides an honest self-assessment is enough.
